Karen Walker Eyewear

Karen Walker is a New Zealand-born fashion designer with a reputation for her original, effortless and unpretentious style.

Since 2002 Karen has been working closely with stylist Heathermary Jackson on all her collections.Karen Walker receives fantastic editorial coverage including regular pages in American and British magazines such as i-D, Vogue, Teen Vogue, Elle, W and Nylon.

Phaidon have included her in their recent book Sample which curates the 100 most influential designers to emerge in the last 6 years, and Taschen have also included her in their recent book Fashion Now 2 which highlights the world’s most important 160 designers as selected by i-D magazine.

Karen was awarded the 2007 Prix de Marie Claire award for best creative talent.

Karen’s collections are high casual with one foot in tailoring and the other in street wear. The recurring theme is taking extremes and pushing them together - masculine and feminine, tailored and street, luxury and non-luxury, dark and super-cute. Overall the label has a feeling of effortlessness and has been described by the UK’s Independent newspaper as being “The kind of look that provides a means of appearing cool but not trying-too-hard, cute but not saccharine, alternative but not self consciously so. The fact that these clothes appear to be so totally not ‘fashion’ is what makes them so now”.

The collections all have the outsider as their inspiration. Karen Walker’s work celebrates the anti-‘it-girl’ - characters like Ally Sheedy’s heavy fringed weirdo in The Breakfast Club, orphan Annie, the juvenile delinquent prom queen who climbs out the window after curfew to run with the bad crowd, Woody Allen’s persistently dissatisfied Annie Hall, an Amelia Earhart inspired adventuress who, after crash-landing in the jungle, turns her back on civilisation in preference of tribal life, or 1930s comic book super-heroines leading double lives.

In addition to her main womenswear collections Karen also designs Karen Walker Jewellery, selling in exclusive boutiques and department stores in New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the United States; Karen Walker Eyewear sold through exclusive boutiques, eyewear stores and department stores in Australia, Japan, the UK, USA and New Zealand; and Karen Walker Paints, a selection of paint colours sold through Resene paint stores throughout New Zealand and Australia.

Recent collaborative ventures include a pop-up store in New York’s East Village concept store The Den, a makeup project with Boots 17 in the UK and a t-shirt collaboration with the UK’s hippest poet / fashion designer House of Holland.Celebrities such as Björk, Sienna Miller, Jennifer Lopez, Claire Danes, Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler, Mandi Moore, Shirley Manson, Kate Hudson, Kelly Osbourne, Claudia Schiffer, Drew Barrymore and Madonna all favour her work with four pieces from the Dust collection featuring on Kate Winslet in Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman’s legendary Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Karen Walker is stocked in over 250 stores throughout the world in cities including New York, London, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Sydney and Tokyo. There are also three Karen Walker flagship stores in New Zealand and one flagship store in Taipei.

Available now at selective stockist in Singapore.

The Killers gets CASSIUS eyewear

Excerpts from CASSIUS eyewear blogspot:

The Killers, played their second 'killer' New Zealand show in Auckland! No photographs or photographers were allowed at their shows (they have their own personal photographers thank you very much), which was a shame as Brandon's feathered shoulder pads and the Sin City-worthy visuals were amazing.
Earlier in the week, we were asked; and Brandon, Dave, Mark and Ronnie were each gifted with a pair of hand-picked Cassius Eyewear. And again, the weather here has been rain all week so no chance of seeing them out-and-about wearing them on this leg of their tour! Crap.
They should come in handy though when they get home to Las Vegas; February was my third time there and their lights get bigger and brighter every time!
Oh and please send us pics if you pap(arazzi) The Killers wearing them!

Tell time the NOOKA way

Nooka timepieces are renowned for their ingenuity and design, as well as the quality of the materials we use. By using fine diamonds and genuine crocodile bands with a digital display, or bold, ambitious colors to complement your sneaker collection, our goal is to Nooka-fy the way you use timepiece accessories. In 2009, we will embark upon the next stage of our brand development with the introduction of Nooka lifestyle accessories for home and body. Now that we've changed the way you think about time, we will change the way you think about other objects you use on a daily basis. Let us Nooka-fy you!

Nooka means "sleek" in hawaiian.

Nooka is the ancient Amararunk'thuh word meaning "future is now".
Nooka is a contraction of "New Yorker" as pronounced with a native New York accent.

Nooka is a the first part of "New York" and the last part of "Osaka" expressing the global aesthetic of its creator.

Matthew Waldman is a creative director with over 15 years experience crafting corporate identities and design systems for a wide array of clients. His graphic design studio, Berrymatch, creates award winning videos and web work for clients in the U.S., Japan, and the UK. Matthew is also an artist and educator instructing at the Parsons School of Design and the New School University in New York City and producing the Fairy Labor Union art collection that can be viewed in fine art galleries around the world.

Now, with Nooka Inc., he turns his talents to develop groundbreaking products - starting with the world reknown Nooka timepieces.

There is a realm we can not see, can not hear, can not taste nor smell, yet from this realm comes everything perceived as real. Within this higher dimensional place lives beings who call themselves what can only be transliterated as: Nooka. Their physiology is transient, eternal in their world, ephemeral yet immortal in ours – beyond imagination yet real enough to feel. Time is to them as carbohydrates are to us, and from this they poo carrots and kittens [or anything else you can request]. They pee gravity and what is the equivalent of light to them is dark matter in our universe. All that aside, the similarities in names drew the Nookas to Nooka Inc. and a trans-dimensional relationship was forged!

Now the official mascot of Nooka Inc., the NookaNookaTM can spread the cheer of wonder-through-design [wtdTM] to the 4 corners of the earth.
